Gratitude is how a forgetful people stay in the story. It does not deny need; it refuses to let need be the only word in the room.

The psalms thank God in the middle of enemies, not after they disappear. Thanksgiving is a way of seeing, not a reward for an easy week.
Practice. List seven gifts from the last twenty-four hours, including ordinary ones. Read them back as prayer.
